Constituents Defend Rep. Sesi Whingan Amid Smuggling Allegations

Some wellmeaning and notable constituents of Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, have dismissed allegations linking him to fuel smuggling, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

In a wave of solidarity according to CityMood Badagry, community leaders, youth groups, and concerned constituents have rallied behind the lawmaker, calling the accusations an attempt to tarnish his reputation.

Community Leaders Condemn Allegations

Miwawiwe Hunga, a respected community leader and senior executive at a top consulting firm, condemned the claims as a politically driven smear campaign.

"I have worked closely with Hon. Whingan, and his commitment to Badagry’s progress is unquestionable," Hunga said. "In politics, people fabricate lies to discredit those they see as threats. These false accusations are being fueled by those who secretly envy his rise."

Similarly, Amb. Prince Sunday Oke, a prominent youth leader, criticized what he described as a disturbing trend of false accusations against politicians.

"Instead of uplifting our representatives, some choose to bring them down with baseless allegations," Oke said. "We cannot allow envy to destroy the reputation of a leader who holds the highest political office in our constituency."

Youth Groups Reject Smuggling Claims

The Progressive Youth Frontiers (PYF), Lagos and Badagry chapters, issued a joint statement denouncing the allegations, arguing that they were unsupported by evidence.

"The accusations rely on speculation rather than facts," the statement read. "Hon. Whingan has consistently advocated for transparency and economic reforms. It is no surprise that those affected by his stance on illicit activities are now targeting him with falsehoods."

Signed by Prince Daniel Akoteyon Peters (PYF Lagos Coordinator), Mayowa Adebajo (PYF Badagry Coordinator), and Comr. Bamidele (PYF Badagry Secretary), the statement warned against using misinformation as a political weapon.

Video Evidence Dismissed

Some constituents who reviewed the video purportedly linking Whingan to smuggling described it as inconclusive.

Engr. Oluwatosin Nunayon Samuel, a known political analyst in the region, pointed out the lack of direct evidence.

"The video neither shows Hon. Whingan nor features his voice," Samuel stated. "At first, I questioned why his media team responded to such a weak claim, but given the political climate, it was necessary."

Calls for Constructive Engagement

While standing in support of the lawmaker, Dr. Seun Williams, an international scholar, urged Whingan’s team to engage with constituents beyond crisis management.

"I hope they show the same level of responsiveness to genuine concerns from the people as they have in refuting these allegations," Williams noted.

As the controversy unfolds, Whingan’s supporters maintain that his track record speaks for itself. They highlight his recent motion to investigate Nigerian Customs Service activities in border areas as evidence of his commitment to economic integrity and development in Badagry and Nigeria at large.
