In a statement issued by his Senior Legislative Aide, Faruk Tanko Tunga in Abuja office, Hon. Whingan clarified that his only involvement in the matter was his recent motion in the House, calling for an investigation into the impact of smuggling on legitimate trade and the livelihoods of border communities. The motion, which also sought scrutiny of the Nigerian Customs Service and its leadership, aimed to restore public trust and strengthen economic stability.
“As a representative of a border community, Hon. Whingan has been vocal about the economic struggles of his constituents, particularly the youth, who have suffered due to the prolonged closure of the Nigeria–Benin border since 2019,” the statement read. “His efforts have been directed at ensuring transparency in trade policies, not illegal activities.”
The lawmaker’s rejoinder also highlighted concerns over the alleged complicity of some high-ranking customs officials in smuggling operations through alternative routes, such as Oja-Odan in Ogun State. Independent reports have exposed figures said to be operating with impunity, yet authorities have taken little action to address these claims.
Hon. Whingan challenged those behind the allegations to provide verifiable proof, maintaining that he remains committed to policies that will improve the welfare of Badagry residents. “This smear campaign will not deter him from advocating for a fair and prosperous economic environment for his people,” Tunga emphasized.
He called on stakeholders, the media, and the public to focus on constructive engagement and fact-based discussions rather than unfounded accusations. “Hon. Whingan is steadfast in his legislative duty to hold those truly responsible accountable,” the statement concluded.
As the controversy unfolds, political observers will be watching closely to see how the allegations and the lawmaker’s call for border trade reforms impact ongoing discussions in the National Assembly.
