In a statement released on Thursday from Kaduna, NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, expressed concern that the bill could destabilize Nigeria’s governance framework and foster regional imbalances.
“This bill is unjust and poses a significant threat to the principles of equity and fairness that should guide our nation’s governance,” Abubakar stated.
He argued that approving Lagos’ request to upgrade its LCDAs without a comprehensive review of local government structures nationwide could set a troubling precedent.
“If these 37 LCDAs are upgraded to LGAs, it will create a dangerous precedent. Undoubtedly, other LCDAs across the country will seek similar recognition, leading to widespread agitation,” he warned.
Abubakar called on Nigerian governors, particularly those from the North, to resist the bill and advocate for a fair governance system.
“We urge Nigerian governors, especially from Northern Nigeria, to oppose this bill. They must stand firm as advocates of equitable governance, ensuring that policies and legislation cater to the interests of all Nigerians, not just a particular region,” he emphasized.
Highlighting the need for inclusivity, Abubakar advocated for broad-based dialogue before decisions on LGA creation are made.
“Any discourse on LGA creation should involve inclusive consultations with all stakeholders to ensure decisions are reflective of the diverse needs of the entire nation, rather than favoring a select few,” he noted.
The NYCN reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and urged lawmakers to consider the broader implications of the proposed bill.
“As we progress, the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria remains dedicated to promoting unity, equity, and fairness in governance. We appeal to lawmakers to carefully reconsider the implications of this bill and prioritize the collective interest of all Nigerians,” Abubakar concluded.
