Hon. Bonu Solomon Saanu, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Badagry Constituency I, has raised serious concerns over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by users of the Agbara Market, Ogun State.

The lawmaker highlighted the issue during the Lagos State House Committee's preparation for the 2025 state budget, describing it as a growing menace that poses environmental and traffic challenges.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Hon. Bonu described the situation as a growing environmental and traffic challenge, stressing its adverse impact on efforts to maintain a cleaner Lagos.

“The Agbara market in Ogun State has indeed become a significant challenge for the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). The market's proximity to the Badagry corridor has led to the Badagry Expressway being used as a refuse dump site, causing environmental and traffic concerns,” he wrote.

The lawmaker emphasized the need for swift intervention from LAWMA and the Lagos State Task Force, urging them to work collaboratively to address the issue. He further noted that the Lagos State Government’s drive towards a cleaner Lagos is being undermined by the activities of the market users.

“This issue was one of the critical points I emphasized during the budget preparation. It is crucial for LAWMA and the Lagos State Task Force to address this situation urgently,” he added.

Residents and motorists along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway have long complained about the refuse heaps, which not only mar the road’s aesthetics but also contribute to traffic congestion and health risks.

Bonu’s call comes as Lagos State continues its push for environmental sustainability through various waste management initiatives. It remains to be seen how the authorities will tackle the cross-border refuse dumping menace.

The remarks by the Lagos lawmaker highlight the need for inter-state collaboration between Lagos and Ogun governments to address the environmental fallout from activities bordering the two states. He urged all stakeholders to work towards sustainable solutions to safeguard the well-being of Lagos residents and restore order to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
