Clean Up Badagry Initiative

In a bid to tackle the growing environmental challenges in Badagry, the Cleanup Badagry Initiative, a group established by young individuals in the town, is spearheading efforts to clean up various areas of Badagry. This decisive action aims to restore the town’s natural beauty. As part of its mission, the initiative will launch a major cleanup exercise at the historic Agbalata Market on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

According to statement released by the group's Director of Planning, Ajisegiri Sedomo, this community-driven program seeks to address critical issues like improper waste disposal, polluted waterways, and insufficient waste management infrastructure in Badagry, a town celebrated for its cultural heritage and coastal charm.

"The Cleanup Badagry Initiative, a groundbreaking environmental project, has officially been launched to tackle the rising waste and pollution challenges in the historic town of Badagry. This community-driven movement is poised to restore the natural beauty of Badagry while fostering sustainable waste management practices among residents and businesses," Sedomo said in a statement.

The Cleanup Badagry Initiative has outlined its core objectives, which include: reducing pollution in key locations such as beaches, markets, and residential areas, educating residents on sustainable waste management practices, promoting environmental sustainability through recycling and eco-friendly solutions and creating a cleaner, healthier environment for all Badagry residents.

The first cleanup effort will kick off at Agbalata Market at 8 a.m., with volunteers, partners, and community members uniting to clear waste and restore the area’s aesthetic appeal.

The organization is urging individuals, businesses, and local stakeholders to support the initiative. Whether through volunteering, financial contributions, or providing essential resources like waste disposal equipment, gloves, and cleaning supplies, every contribution will play a pivotal role in transforming Badagry’s environment.

Speaking on the initiative, organizers emphasized their vision for a waste-conscious community where sustainable practices are part of daily life. By fostering collaboration among residents and stakeholders, the Cleanup Badagry Initiative aims to position Badagry as a beacon of environmental sustainability in Lagos State.
