In a bid to alleviate transportation challenges during the festive season, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced plans to auction 15,325 litres of seized petrol at a subsidized rate of ₦400 per litre. The announcement was made by the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Hussein Ejibunu, during a press briefing in Ikeja, Lagos.
Ejibunu revealed that the seized petrol, valued at ₦27.5 million, was intercepted by Customs operatives in the Lagos-Ogun axis during an ongoing anti-smuggling operation that commenced on May 27, 2024. The operation has led to the confiscation of 613 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other contraband, disrupting the activities of economic saboteurs.
He emphasized that all legal processes, including obtaining a court condemnation order, have been completed to facilitate the auctioning of the product. According to Ejibunu, the seized petrol will be sold directly to the public at the rate of ₦10,000 per 25 litres.
“The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has directed that this auction be conducted to help ease transportation difficulties during this festive period. The Customs Service remains committed to sustaining efforts to combat smuggling activities nationwide,” Ejibunu stated.
The announcement comes as the landing cost of imported petrol reportedly drops to ₦900 per litre, further highlighting the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum supply chain.
This initiative by the NCS is expected to provide some relief to commuters and transport operators grappling with high fuel prices during the yuletide season.
