Hon. Donatus Mathew, a former commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) who was elected to the House of Representatives on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Mathew, representing Kaura Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, is one of five members of the House who recently resigned their party memberships to join the APC.

The other defectors include Hon. Tochukwu from Imo State, Hon. Bassey Akiba from Cross River State, and Hon. Iyawe Esosa from Edo State, all of whom were also members of the LP. Additionally, Hon. Eriethake Ibori-Suenu, daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori and representative of Ethiope Federal Constituency in Delta State, defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

In letters read during plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the defectors attributed their decisions to internal crises within the LP and PDP.

Labour Party's Response

The Labour Party has strongly opposed the defection of its four House members to the APC. The party announced its intention to request the House leadership to declare the defectors’ seats vacant. This was revealed in a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.

The party expressed dismay at the growing trend of defections and reiterated its commitment to holding defecting lawmakers accountable. It also disclosed plans to initiate legal action against the defectors and announced the establishment of a register to document members and elected officials who, in its words, "disgrace the party by switching allegiance to other political platforms."

The LP's statement followed the reading of the defection letters on the House floor, marking yet another challenge for the opposition party in its bid to consolidate its political influence.
