Alhaji Mohammed Umar has been installed as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry, Lagos State, by the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, in a ceremony that celebrated cultural unity and peaceful coexistence.

The event, held at Sito Gbethrome Community along the Semé expressway, drew Fulani socio-cultural leaders from across the South-West and neighboring Benin Republic. During the installation, Oba James presented Umar with a traditional staff and beads, symbolizing his authority.

While addressing the gathering, Oba Sejiro praised the peaceful nature of the Fulani people and called on the new Seriki to foster harmony within the diverse communities of Badagry.

“Though the stool you are on is high, you have been endorsed by God today, and He will guide you,” Oba James said. He urged Umar to proactively address tensions between pastoralists and farmers and appoint representatives across communities to strengthen communication and collaboration.

Alhaji Saidu Yusuf, Chairman of the APC Arewa Communities in Lagos, emphasized the importance of unity between Fulani and Yoruba communities, urging collaboration beyond political affiliations.

“We should put politics aside and work for the development of our communities,” Yusuf stated.

Similarly, Alhaji Mohammed Laba, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and Chairman of Meyiti Allah, South-West, highlighted the role of traditional leaders in resolving conflicts. He encouraged the new Seriki to discourage criminal activities and uphold peace in host communities.

“We want peaceful relationships with our host communities, who have given us land to live and work on. In return, we will ensure mutual respect and harmony,” Laba affirmed.

In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Mohammed Umar pledged to address pressing challenges such as poverty, education, and healthcare while preserving Fulani cultural heritage. He also urged pastoralists to adhere to community regulations on cattle rearing and contribute to the development of Badagry.

“We must preserve our traditions while embracing innovation and progress. I will work tirelessly to promote cultural interests and ensure peace and harmony for all,” Umar assured the audience.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Oba Adekanmi Oyekanmi, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom; Oba Olusegun Wheto, the Aholu of Dale Whedako; traditional chiefs; and representatives from the Nigeria Police and Army.

Prayers for wisdom and effective leadership were offered, signaling hope for a strengthened relationship between Fulani residents and their Badagry hosts.
