Hon. Setonji, who previously served as Deputy Chief Whip, was elevated to Chief Whip on January 17, 2025, during the first plenary session presided over by the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. The announcement of his appointment marked the transition following the dissolution of the previous leadership under the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
In his maiden assignment as Chief Whip, Hon. Setonji led the House to commiserate with the people of Badagry over the passing of Pa Sunny Ajose, a respected elder statesman and member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee (GAC). During the plenary, he expressed deep condolences to the family of the late politician and the Badagry community.
Several lawmakers, including Abiodun Tobun (Epe Constituency 1) and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), joined in the tribute, describing Pa Ajose as an accomplished politician and civil servant who dedicated his life to fostering unity in Badagry and strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaker Mojisola Meranda also paid homage to the late leader, calling him a "rare gem" whose contributions to governance and the party would be deeply missed. She directed the Acting Clerk of the House to dispatch a formal condolence letter to Pa Ajose’s family and the people of Badagry.
This solemn assignment underscores Hon. Setonji David's new role as Chief Whip, where he is expected to play a pivotal part in maintaining order and discipline within the Assembly while advancing legislative priorities.
