Buhari made this disclosure during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina State. He emphasized that his modest lifestyle is evidence of his commitment to combating corruption during his tenure.
Speaking on the complexities of governance, the former president described Nigeria as a particularly challenging country to lead. "Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country," he said.
He recounted his personal sacrifices, stating, "After my eight years as a civilian president, I have only three houses—one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding."
Buhari reiterated his anti-corruption stance, asserting that no one could accuse him of enriching himself unlawfully. "I refrained from enriching myself illicitly during my presidency," he declared, reaffirming his commitment to integrity and accountability during his years in office.
The former president’s remarks have sparked debates on the sacrifices and challenges of leadership in Nigeria, with many reflecting on his legacy as a proponent of transparency and simplicity.
