Speaking in an exclusive interview with BR Pulse Nigeria, the traditional ruler emphasized the importance of prioritizing competence and service over financial inducements.
With Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurating the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Friday, January 10, and announcing the forthcoming elections across Lagos's 57 councils, Oba Ogabi expressed concern about the potential for candidates to exploit financial leverage to secure positions.
“Competence must take precedence over financial considerations,” Oba Ogabi stated. “If candidates are pressured financially during campaigns, they may focus on recovering their investments instead of serving the people. This undermines the essence of leadership and governance.”
Reflecting on his tenure as the pioneer chairman of Olorunda LCDA, the Onimeke urged the electorate to support candidates who demonstrate a genuine commitment to addressing the needs of their communities. He also appealed to party leaders to uphold integrity during the candidate selection process.
“As a traditional ruler and someone who has witnessed the sacrifices made to establish Olorunda LCDA, I stress the need for unity and careful selection of leaders who listen to the people. Our collective efforts to build this LCDA must not be wasted,” he added.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s inauguration of LASIEC is seen as a crucial step toward ensuring credible and transparent elections. The governor reiterated his commitment to strengthening local governance structures and urged all stakeholders to cooperate in fostering a fair electoral process.
The 2025 elections are expected to serve as a litmus test for grassroots democracy in Lagos, with citizens keenly watching the conduct of political parties and their candidates.
