The victim, Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, is currently receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital, where she was transferred after initial care at Keoetochukwu Hospital, Nsukka. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of the fleeing suspect, who is now in custody awaiting prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, described the attack as barbaric and reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring justice.
“This is a deeply heartbreaking and horrifying act,” Enih stated during a visit to the victim at the hospital. “It serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to eliminate gender-based violence (GBV) in our society. Violence against women and girls, in any form, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Enugu State.”
The commissioner assured the public that the state government would provide necessary support for the victim and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law. She called on all stakeholders and community leaders to join efforts in eradicating GBV and fostering a safer environment for women and girls.
“Let this serve as a severe warning to potential perpetrators,” Enih warned. “Enugu State has zero tolerance for gender-based violence. We will act decisively to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of every woman in our state.”
The government’s swift response underscores its commitment to addressing GBV as a pressing societal issue. Authorities have urged citizens to report such cases and stand firm against violence in all its forms.
