The lawmaker made this call in a press release issued from his office in Badagry on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
This decision follows a petition submitted by Hon. Whingan to the National Assembly in October 2024. The petition highlighted the financial and psychological toll inflicted on commuters due to excessive checkpoints and extortion by security personnel. It was presented during a House plenary, with Comrade Aladeotan David and his team championing the concerns raised at the Badagry Stakeholders and Youth Engagement event.
Hon. Whingan expressed appreciation for the swift response by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Zone 2 Command) and other security agencies. Following high-level deliberations, checkpoints were strategically approved at four locations: Seme Point, Gbaji Point, Apa Point, and Agbara Point.
“This decision is a remarkable victory for the people of Badagry and all road users along this critical corridor. It signifies a step towards reducing hardship, curbing extortion, and promoting economic growth,” Hon. Whingan stated.
The lawmaker commended the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Customs Service, and other security agencies for their commitment to addressing the issue. He emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of the new checkpoint policy and urged the public to report any violations via the designated hotlines: +2347088158606 and +2349062011772.
Hon. Whingan reaffirmed his dedication to the welfare of his constituents, pledging to monitor the situation closely and continue advocating for their rights and interests. “This is not just about reducing checkpoints; it is about restoring dignity to commuters and fostering a conducive environment for progress,” he added.
This development marks a major milestone in Hon. Whingan’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges faced by his constituency and ensure effective governance for the people of Badagry.
