A Former Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has criticized Senator Anthony Adefuye, a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), over his public support for the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency 1, was impeached on January 13 by lawmakers over alleged misconduct and replaced by the former Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. Despite his removal, Obasa has maintained that due process was not followed, insisting he remains the rightful Speaker and denying allegations of corruption leveled against him.

Speaking to his supporters in Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa claimed, “My removal was illegal. I remain the Speaker of the House and will resume my legislative duties soon.”

In a recent interview, Adefuye defended Obasa’s position, stating, “What Obasa is saying is that he was illegally removed and the procedure was faulty. I agree with him.”

Reacting to Adefuye’s comments, Senator Obanikoro described the statement as “unfortunate, childish, and inconsequential.” Obanikoro, also a member of the GAC, expressed dismay over Adefuye’s decision to publicly comment on the sensitive matter without the collective input of the council.

“The statement by Senator Adefuye on the removal of Mudashiru Obasa is very unfortunate. As leaders, it is unbecoming to rush to the press or make personal statements on such issues, especially when the GAC as a body has not made any pronouncement on the matter,” Obanikoro told reporters on Sunday.

He further emphasized the need for discipline and respect for hierarchy within the GAC. “Our leader, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has intervened in this matter. It is, therefore, irresponsible for any member of this privileged body to independently express opinions based on personal sentiments,” he added.

The controversy surrounding Obasa’s impeachment has continued to fuel divisions within the GAC, raising questions about unity and leadership within the APC’s Lagos structure. As the debate rages on, observers are keen to see how the party resolves the growing disquiet.
