The impeachment of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has sparked a wave of political maneuvering, with members jostling for key positions in the restructured leadership. Following the emergence of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker, intense lobbying for principal offices and influential committee chairmanships has begun, raising critical questions about the implications for Badagry's representation.

In the aftermath of Obasa's removal, all principal offices and committees were dissolved by the new Speaker. Sources within the Assembly, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that ranking lawmakers are working tirelessly to secure strategic roles. Many are leveraging their influence and connections, particularly with members of the Governor's Advisory Council, (GAC). Historically, experienced legislators are favored for such roles, positioning seasoned lawmakers from Badagry for potential elevation.

Some legislators have reportedly begun shadowing the new Speaker closely. Observers noted that a few members perceived as her loyalists accompanied her to a briefing with the GAC yesterday, to brief Council, the events leading to the former Speaker's removal and sought the Council's endorsement of Speaker Meranda's leadership.

Badagry Constituency II is represented by Hon. Engr. Setonji David, a third-term legislator and former Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly. His extensive experience makes him a strong contender for a principal officer position in the restructured leadership. Stakeholders argue that Badagry, as a major division in Lagos State, deserves substantial representation in the Assembly’s leadership, with Hon. David’s promotion being a crucial step toward that goal.

Similarly, Hon. Bonu Solomon Saanu, representing Badagry Constituency I, is expected to retain or advance beyond his current position as Chairman of the House Committee on Arts, Culture, and Tourism. Despite being a first-term legislator, his performance has been widely regarded as commendable. Many believe he merits a more significant portfolio in the new Assembly structure.

Badagry’s political stakeholders and residents are keeping a keen eye on the ongoing developments. The region’s importance within the Lagos IBILE framework underscores the necessity of strong representation in the Assembly’s leadership and committees. Observers assert that Hon. Setonji David’s rise to a principal officer role and Hon. Bonu’s retention or elevation would signify a major victory for the division.

The current lobbying and negotiations will test the political acumen and influence of Badagry’s representatives. Their success in securing prominent positions will not only enhance their individual standing but also determine the level of influence Badagry wields in Lagos State legislative affairs moving forward.

As the state awaits the announcement of new principal officers and committee leaders, attention remains focused on the shifting power dynamics within the Assembly and the potential benefits for Badagry in this new dispensation.
