Chief Muraino Akanbi Taiwo, a prominent member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has described the recent impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by the Lagos State House of Assembly as illegal.
The lawmakers reconvened on January 13, 2025, while the House was on recess, to remove Obasa, who was reportedly away in the United States. In his place, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was installed as the new Speaker of the Assembly.
Speaking at the weekend, Obasa dismissed the impeachment, declaring it null and void on the grounds that it did not follow due process.
This controversial move has divided members of the GAC. Senator Anthony Adefuye defended Obasa, asserting that the removal was unlawful, while former minister and ambassador, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, disagreed, labeling Adefuye’s stance as “childish and inconsequential.”

In a statement released on Monday, Taiwo criticized the lawmakers’ actions, saying:
“The act of the lawmakers to reconvene during the recess is illegal. It shows total disregard and clear disrespect for the leadership of the party.”
Acknowledging the division within the GAC over the matter, Taiwo expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as the party’s de facto leader, to resolve the dispute.
“Obviously, the GAC leadership is split over the matter, but we will all defer to the final decision of our de facto leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to resolve the crisis,” he added.
The unfolding events in the Lagos State Assembly have sparked widespread debate among political stakeholders, with concerns mounting over the implications for due process and party unity.
