Badagry Local Government Chairman, Hon. Onilude Segun Adeniran, is set to disburse the 2024 bursary awards to tertiary institution students of Badagry origin, according to Mrs. Sewede Port-Balogun, the council's Supervisor for Education, Badagry Today understands.

This disclosure was made in response to an open letter from concerned students regarding delays in the bursary disbursement. The letter, signed by representatives of the students, highlighted the financial strain caused by the delay, especially as many institutions have resumed for the new academic session, report according to News Peddler detailed.

In her rejoinder, our source said Mrs. Sewede acknowledged the students’ concerns, attributing the delay to "unforeseen circumstances beyond the administration's control." She assured the students that the issues have been resolved and disbursement would commence shortly.

“It is encouraging to see our future leaders express their concerns in a mature and disciplined manner. The Onilude-led administration has consistently prioritized education by implementing initiatives such as free JAMB forms, summer schools, improved school facilities, and bursary programs. The delay was unavoidable, but we are now ready to proceed,” Mrs. Sewede said according to our source

Student Leaders Speak
Ayomide Gbeyon, President of the National Association of Badagry Students (NABAS), confirmed that the screening process for the 2024 bursary was completed in October 2024. He assured students that efforts are ongoing to ensure a swift resolution to the matter.

“We’ve been in contact with the relevant authorities, including the chairman, and I can assure you that all hands are on deck to expedite the process. We appreciate the students’ patience and will provide updates as developments occur,” Gbeyon stated.

Chairman's Media Aide Responds
According to News Peddlers, Kriko Augustine, the media aide to Hon. Onilude, explained that the chairman has been addressing other pressing issues but remains committed to fulfilling the bursary promise. "The bursary will be disbursed at the appropriate time. The administration values the education of Badagry students and will ensure this support reaches them soon," Augustine said.

Students’ Plea
In their letter, the students emphasized the importance of the bursary in alleviating financial challenges and urged the local government to uphold its commitment to educational development in the community.

The bursary scheme, initiated in December 2023, represents a significant investment in the future of Badagry youths. Stakeholders are optimistic that the latest round of disbursements will reinforce the administration’s dedication to supporting education.
