The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday around Fijabi House, Agbowo, on the Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway. According to a statement from Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and somersaulted into a nearby pit before bursting into flames.
“The agency received a distress call about the fire incident at exactly 2:45 a.m. Through swift intervention, our personnel were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby residential areas,” Akinyinka said.
He confirmed that the tanker driver was burnt to death, while the motor boy sustained injuries and was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment.
The fire completely destroyed the tanker, but firefighters managed to save the other two trucks involved in the accident.
Akinyinka noted that the agency’s Director of Operations, Mr. Ismail Adeleke, along with police and other security personnel, was present at the scene to maintain order and oversee rescue efforts.
The Oyo State Fire Services commended residents for their cooperation during the incident and urged road users to exercise caution to prevent future tragedies.
