In a major crackdown on financial crimes, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested multiple suspects and recovered counterfeit currencies worth ₦129.5 billion in separate operations conducted in Kano and Nasarawa States.  

According to a Statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi shared on X, formerly Twitter, the first operation, carried out on December 8, 2024, in Gwale, Kano State, led to the arrest of Nura Ibrahim. Acting on credible intelligence, officers uncovered counterfeit currencies amounting to ₦129,542,823,000. The haul included $3,366,000 in counterfeit U.S. dollars, 51,970 counterfeit CFA francs, and ₦1,443,000 in fake Nigerian naira notes. Ibrahim’s arrest subsequently led to the apprehension of two accomplices, Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi.  

In a separate operation on January 13, 2025, police arrested 53-year-old Ephraim Barde in New Karu, Nasarawa State. Barde was found in possession of $160,000 in counterfeit U.S. dollar notes. Authorities are currently investigating the extent of his operations and any connections to other criminal networks.  

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) reaffirmed the Force's commitment to combating financial crimes through initiatives like the establishment of the Anti-Money Laundering Units. The IGP also called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s financial system.  

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in protecting the nation’s economy and ensuring a secure environment for all Nigerians and residents.
