The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated its commitment to leveraging electronic and ICT strategies in crime prevention, highlighting the significant role of digital policing tools such as the Police Rescue Me App, Police VGS Emergency App, and the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) portal.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized that these technologies are integral to curbing vehicle-related crimes and enhancing the overall security architecture in Nigeria. As part of these efforts, the Force confirmed the successful recovery of 1,519 stolen vehicles in the past year, with 52 vehicles retrieved in January 2025 alone.

The e-CMR portal, a digital repository for licensed motor vehicles, has played a critical role in the fight against vehicle theft. Since its activation:

  • Over 400,000 vehicles have been registered in the database.
  • 1,011 stolen vehicles have been reported.
  • Three stolen vehicles were recovered in October 2024, including one returned to its rightful owner at the Force Headquarters.
  • Two stolen vehicles were recently recovered in Kano State.
  • 5,877 vehicles with conflicting registration details are under investigation.

The Police detailed a recent operation where a Toyota Highlander stolen in 2021 was recovered in Enugu State. The vehicle, originally stolen on January 13, 2021, was reported two years later via the *Stolen Vehicle Report Portal*. The stolen SUV was sold to a buyer in Kano, who unknowingly registered it on the *e-CMR portal*. The system flagged it as stolen, leading to an investigation that resulted in its recovery. The seller and buyer are now set to face legal proceedings.

To further assist Nigerians in verifying vehicle status, the Police are developing a USSD-based verification module in collaboration with mobile network operators. This initiative aims to make it easier for individuals to check vehicle ownership history before purchase.

The Force encourages all vehicle owners to register their details at: https://cmris.npf.gov.ng, and the for stolen vehicle reports, visit: https://reportcmr.npf.gov.ng

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Police's dedication to modernizing crime-fighting strategies through technological solutions, urging citizens to actively participate in crime prevention efforts by reporting suspicious activities.
