The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the Celestial Church of Christ Eagle Parish, located along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses reported that three gunmen stormed the church, targeting Adetula, who was also the Director of Anti-Arms Smuggling at the Social Orientation and Safety Corps (So-Safe) in Ogun State.
According to reports, the gunmen initially fired at Adetula, but when the bullets failed to penetrate, they resorted to using other weapons, including an axe, to ensure his death. Gory images of the aftermath revealed the prophet’s mangled body, his celestial garment soaked in blood.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said the prophet’s body was recovered at the scene in a pool of blood. “His body was riddled with bullets, and his head was severely mutilated, indicating the attackers’ intent to confirm his death,” Odutola stated.
The prophet’s remains have been deposited at the Ilaro General Hospital morgue, while investigations are underway. The assailants reportedly fled towards the border area after the attack.
Adetula’s murder has raised suspicions of foul play linked to his involvement in a high-profile libel case. The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) confirmed in a report that Adetula was a key witness in Fisayo Soyombo’s defense against a lawsuit filed by businessman IBD Dende. The case stems from an undercover investigation and documentary exposing smuggling activities, which also led to a viral social media campaign tagged “Good Morning Nigeria Customs.”
Residents of Idiroko believe the attack was premeditated. “From the way they operated, it’s clear they were hired assassins,” one witness told FIJ.
As authorities intensify efforts to unravel the motive behind the killing and apprehend the culprits, the tragic incident has thrown the local community and the investigative journalism community into mourning.
