Obasa, who was away in the United States during the vote, had three of his staunchest allies accompanying him. The remaining four dissenting voices were present but opted not to join the wave of discontent.
Below are profiles of the seven lawmakers who refrained from supporting the motion:
1. Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1)
Akinsanya, a two-term lawmaker, has been a steady force in Mushin Constituency 1 since 2019. He currently chairs the House Committee on Public Accounts (Local) and has served on numerous committees, including Economic Planning & Budget, Finance, and Housing. Known for his methodical approach to governance, Akinsanya’s decision not to vote for Obasa’s impeachment suggests a calculated political stance.
2. Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi/Ifelodun 1)
Representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun Constituency 1, Olumoh is another second-term lawmaker. Previously the Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, his ties to Obasa’s administration remain evident. Olumoh’s abstention highlights his enduring allegiance to the former Speaker.
3. Hon. Noheem Babatunde Adams (Eti-Osa 1)
A former Majority Leader, Adams has faced political turbulence since his appointment in 2023. Representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1, he has held significant roles, including Chairman of the Legislative Compliance Committee. His decision to stand by Obasa underscores his loyalty despite the Speaker’s controversial tenure.
4. Hon. Emmanuel Olotu (Ifako/Ijaiye 2)
A first-term lawmaker elected in 2023, Olotu chairs the Committee on Agriculture. His refusal to support the impeachment may reflect a strategic alignment with Obasa, who played a role in shaping his political trajectory.
5. Hon. Shabi Adebola (Lagos Mainland 2)
Also a newcomer, Adebola represents Lagos Mainland Constituency 2. As Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, he has been a vocal supporter of Obasa since his election. His dissent aligns with his reputation as a staunch loyalist of the former Speaker.
6. Hon. Damola Kasumu (Ikeja 2)
Kasumu, the former Deputy Majority Leader, has served Ikeja Constituency 2 since 2015. Renowned for his work in youth development and land administration, Kasumu’s vote reflects his consistent support for Obasa throughout their shared tenure.
7. Hon. Ege Oluwasegun (Ojo 1)
Representing Ojo Constituency 1, Oluwasegun is a first-time legislator who chairs the Committee on Housing. His decision to stand by Obasa is indicative of his loyalty to the former Speaker’s leadership.
The impeachment vote has laid bare the divisions within the Lagos State House of Assembly. While the majority backed the removal of Obasa, the actions of the seven lawmakers have sparked debates over their motivations and future political ambitions.
Observers note that the dissenting lawmakers could face political repercussions as the fallout from Obasa’s impeachment continues to reverberate across the state’s political landscape.
