The attack occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday while Adekoya and his team were returning to Egbe after officiating at a funeral in Ponyan.
Report by Daily Trust mentioned that the group had earlier transported a corpse from a hospital in Egbe for burial in Ponyan. Adekoya, who was well-regarded in the community for his quality funeral services, had recently acquired a fully equipped ambulance on December 24, 2024, with community support to enhance his operations.
According to eyewitnesses, the group encountered the gunmen shortly after repairing a punctured tire on their return journey. The attackers, numbering about 30, reportedly ambushed the vehicle. While others managed to flee, Adekoya was unable to escape due to a previous leg injury that impaired his mobility.
His lifeless body was discovered on Sunday morning by farmers, who raised the alarm.
Ademola Ganiyu, a resident of Egbe, described Adekoya as a beloved figure in the community. “He was deeply respected for his dedication to funeral services. His death is a huge loss to us,” he said.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with some attributing it to the ongoing clashes between residents and herders in the area. Others suspect the attack might be linked to kidnappers, who have reportedly been active in the region for months.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement or confirm any arrests related to the attack.
