His remarks come in response to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently assured that the North would back Tinubu’s second term, insisting that any northern aspirant should wait until 2031. However, Babachir, once a close ally of the President, dismissed Ganduje’s claim, stating that the North has not forgiven Tinubu for the hardship allegedly brought upon the region through his administration’s policies.
In an interview according to Punch, Babachir Lawal echoed the sentiments of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who had earlier warned that the North is mobilizing to ensure Tinubu does not return to power.
“The North is seriously mobilising with a consensus that Bola Tinubu must give way in the 2027 election,” Babachir asserted. “There’s no doubt about this consensus, no argument at all. I may not always align with El-Rufai’s views, but on this, I stand with him to ensure Tinubu does not secure a second term. If he does, northern Nigeria will become one large refugee camp.”
The former SGF emphasized that this movement is not just political rhetoric but a necessity for the region’s survival. He warned that continuing Tinubu’s policies for another four years would further deepen the economic and social crisis in the North.
“There is a consensus that for self-preservation alone, we must find another candidate,” he added.
Babachir dismissed concerns about the region of origin of Tinubu’s potential replacement, emphasizing that competence, patriotism, and a commitment to national unity should be the guiding principles in selecting a candidate.
“Some believe it should be a southerner; others argue we cannot afford the risk of another southerner at this time. That is where the divergence lies. But what is clear is that Tinubu must not return,” he explained.
He further criticized Ganduje and other northern politicians who continue to support the President, describing them as individuals protecting their personal interests rather than the well-being of the northern masses.
“People like Ganduje and some other northerners benefiting from this government are just irritants. They speak only to justify their positions in this rogue administration, without caring about the suffering in the North,” he said.
Babachir concluded by stating that the growing opposition to Tinubu’s re-election bid is not just an elite-driven movement but one fueled by the masses.
“Even if some elites pretend to support Bola, they will not vote for him because they are the ones suffering the most. They are directing us, the northern political elites, to ensure this man doesn’t get a second chance.”
With the 2027 election drawing closer, the political landscape appears to be shifting dramatically, and Tinubu’s path to re-election is shaping up to be a formidable battle.
