Eyewitnesses reported that the crash, which occurred on Saturday, involved two commercial buses that collided head-on while trying to evade traffic by driving against the flow. The impact led to an inferno that claimed the lives of 28 passengers on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital.
Bayo Adefarati, a witness at the scene, recounted the harrowing incident. “Both vehicles were at high speed and packed with passengers. They collided and burst into flames. I counted 30 occupants, and unfortunately, two survivors later died on the way to the hospital. If not for the swift intervention of road safety officials and concerned motorists, the casualty figure could have been higher,” he said.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, attributed the crash to impatience and reckless driving. "Preliminary investigations show that the drivers drove against traffic, leading to a fatal head-on collision. A total of 28 persons were burnt beyond recognition, while two others died while receiving medical attention. Two survivors are currently undergoing treatment," Ibitoye stated.
He urged passengers to speak up against dangerous driving practices and advised drivers to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies. The corpses have since been deposited in a hospital morgue.
