Atiku Accuses President Tinubu of Being Behind Lagos Assembly DSS Invasion

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), a move he described as a direct assault on democracy.

In a statement released on his official Facebook page, Atiku condemned the incident, which was captured in a viral video showing armed security personnel storming the Assembly complex. He expressed disbelief that such a brazen operation could be carried out under the pretext of enforcing a leadership change within the state legislature.

“It is bewildering that the invading operatives reportedly have a mandate to enforce a leadership change in the House,” Atiku wrote. “It is appalling that it is those who claimed to have fought for democracy that decided to sanction this crass desecration of the state’s foremost legislative body, and by so doing, putting our hard-earned democracy in jeopardy.”

The former Vice President emphasized that political disagreements within a democratic setting should be resolved through dialogue rather than the deployment of security forces. He further stated that the incident was a “landmark of indignity” to Nigeria’s electoral system and particularly to the people of Lagos State.

“Whatever may have caused the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly is an undercurrent that is not abnormal in a system of democracy,” Atiku said. “The purported invitation of armed security operatives for a conflict resolution in a parliament is an anathema that should be frowned upon and interrogated with all sense of urgency.”

Atiku also criticized Tinubu’s administration for allegedly meddling in state affairs rather than focusing on the pressing national issues facing Nigeria. He urged the President to prioritize governance and address the economic and security challenges bedeviling the country instead of engaging in what he described as undue interference in Lagos politics.

“Tinubu should focus on bringing Nigeria out of the mess he plunged the country into rather than interfering in the state matters,” he concluded.

The allegations have sparked a fresh wave of political tension, with many calling for an independent investigation into the invasion. The Federal Government and the DSS are yet to issue an official response to Atiku’s claims.
