Minister of Transportation, Sa'idu Alkali, announced the approval on Monday after the FEC meeting, highlighting that the project will play a pivotal role in integrating the Badagry Deep Seaport with other major maritime hubs. The proposed route will link Badagry Deep Seaport to Tincan, connect Tincan to Apapa, and establish transport networks from Lekki Deep Seaport to Ijebu-Ode, extending further to Kajola and the Lagos-Kano-Maradi railway project.
Alkali emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, stating,“The idea is to link the western ports to the hinterland, underscoring the government’s commitment to efficient freight movement and economic expansion.
The Badagry Deep Seaport, envisioned as one of West Africa’s largest maritime gateways, is expected to handle substantial cargo volumes upon completion, enhancing Nigeria’s role in regional and global trade. Its integration into the national transport network is set to decongest existing ports and boost economic activities.
Meanwhile, the FEC also approved N1.067 trillion for the first phase of the coastal highway project, which aims to further improve transport infrastructure and economic connectivity across the region.
With this latest approval, the Badagry Deep Seaport is set to become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s maritime and economic growth, reinforcing its position as a critical hub in the nation’s long-term development strategy.
