The lingering political feud between Governor Ademola Adeleke and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, escalated in the wake of the court verdict, which has deepened tensions between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition APC.
In the early hours of the day, APC members moved en masse to local government secretariats across the state, seeking to reclaim their offices in line with the Appeal Court judgment. However, at the Irewole Local Government Secretariat in Ikire, a confrontation broke out as suspected armed hoodlums ambushed the APC members.
During the chaos, Abass, one of the reinstated chairmen, was shot and killed near the council premises. His lifeless body was later placed in front of the local government headquarters, sparking outrage among supporters. A short video circulating on social media showed the deceased chairman lying in a pool of blood as sympathizers mourned his death.
Meanwhile, the PDP, through the Commissioner for Government Affairs and Protocol, Soji Ajeigbe, claimed that two of its members were also shot at Boripe Local Government. Additionally, a former aide to Oyetola, Jamiu Olawumi, alleged that some APC councilors were killed while attempting to resume office.
The Osun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the violent clashes.
Tensions remain high as both political camps continue to trade accusations over the tragic incident.
