Security operatives sealed off the speaker’s office in the early hours of the day, fueling speculation over her possible exit from office. Heavily armed police officers and task force personnel patrolled the premises, maintaining a strong presence to prevent any unrest.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Meranda arrived at the assembly complex to a mixed reception. Some lawmakers and staff members cheered her arrival, while others observed cautiously. With a defiant smile, she acknowledged the support and took a deliberate stroll around the premises, flanked by her security aides.
Meranda’s position has been in contention since January 13, 2025, when she was elected as the first female speaker of the Lagos Assembly following the controversial removal of Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa, who was out of the country at the time, has since challenged the legality of his ousting, insisting that due process was not followed and that he remains the rightful speaker.
As political uncertainty looms, the situation at the Lagos Assembly remains fluid, with Meranda’s fate hanging in the balance.
