The atmosphere at the Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry, was electrified with celebrations and thunderous ovations yesterday as Dr. Tony Dansu, a distinguished principal lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, was conferred with the prestigious National Merit Award by the Ogu Weme Association of Nigeria (OWAN).

The award, regarded as a high honor within the socio-cultural organization of the Ogus of Weme descent, was presented during the grand finale of the 2025 Ogu Weme Festival. Dr. Dansu was recognized for his unwavering dedication and contributions to the growth of the Ogu Weme Association, particularly the Ikoga-Zebbe Chapter. An inscription on the award plaque lauded his "reliability, hard work, and commitment" as a model for others to follow.

The distinguished award, signed by OWAN's National Coordinator, Alhaji Rabiu Amusa— a retired senior customs officer and CEO of Arakab Hotels and Beach Resorts, Badagry— was handed over by Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs and former four-term lawmaker for Badagry Constituency I, Hon. Olanrewaju Ibrahim Layode.

Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Dansu took to Facebook, revealing that the recognition came as an unexpected but deeply appreciated honor.

"When you called for my preferred passport photograph some days ago, I thought you were using it in the programme of events for today's anniversary. I never knew it was for something so different," he wrote. "This award came as a big surprise for me. Thanks so much for this huge honour. Proudly your member; proudly Ogu son. MI bayi loo."

Hon. Layode, while presenting the award, commended Dr. Dansu's tireless efforts and invaluable contributions to the socio-cultural development of the Ogu people in Badagry and beyond, describing the recognition as "well-deserved".

The event witnessed the presence of several prominent traditional rulers and political figures who came together to celebrate Dr. Dansu's achievement. Among the dignitaries were: HRM Aholu Jimoh Fabiyi– De Ovitotode Sano I of Ikoga-Zebbe Kingdom; HRM, the Agano Toniyon I of Ajara Agamathen Kingdom; HRM, Aholu Abiodun Patinvo of Yafin Kingdom; Hon. Solomon Bonu Saanu – Member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Badagry Constituency I, among others.

The Ogu Weme Festival, which brings together Ogus of Weme descent from Nigeria and the diaspora, commenced on Saturday with traditional libations, prayers, and music at Topa Guest House, Ajara-Topa, Badagry. The grand finale and award presentation at the Nigeria French Language Village marked the peak of the cultural festivities, reinforcing the unity and heritage of the Ogu people.

Dr. Tony Dansu’s recognition at the event further underscores the importance of preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Ogu people, with hopes that his contributions will inspire future generations.
