The tragic discovery was made in the early hours of Saturday, February 15, by members of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group during a routine patrol.
Commander of the group, Rabiu Sulaiman, revealed in a statement on Sunday that his team stumbled upon the carton around 2 a.m. while inspecting the area.
"During our patrol, we noticed a suspicious carton inside a pit close to our path. Out of caution, I directed my team to check its contents, and to our shock, we found a lifeless baby inside," he recounted.
Following the discovery, the vigilantes informed local community leaders and subsequently reported the case to the police. Authorities then directed them to a hospital, where doctors confirmed that the infant was deceased.
The baby was later buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Commander Sulaiman urged vigilante groups to remain vigilant in safeguarding their communities and called on parents to guide their children, particularly young women, to prevent circumstances leading to unwanted pregnancies.
"Unwanted pregnancies contradict Islamic teachings. Parents must monitor their children’s activities and provide proper guidance," he advised.
The incident has sparked concerns over child abandonment in the region, with residents calling for greater awareness and preventive measures.
