The group, in a statement issued on Tuesday, claimed that the security operation was "stage-managed" to create an atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty within the Lagos legislative arm. They argued that the incident was deliberately orchestrated by certain interests who seek to exploit the ongoing leadership crisis in the House to diminish the influence of Obasa and, by extension, embarrass President Tinubu, who is believed to be a political ally of the former Speaker.
"The so-called DSS invasion was not a mere coincidence; it was a well-planned script aimed at creating the impression of instability in the Lagos Assembly," the statement read. "This is part of a larger scheme to discredit Speaker Obasa and tarnish the reputation of President Tinubu, whose support for Obasa is well-known."
The leadership crisis in the House took a dramatic turn following the January 13 impeachment of Obasa while he was away in the United States. His removal sparked controversy, with his loyalists insisting that due process was not followed. Since then, tensions have continued to rise, culminating in the recent deployment of DSS operatives amid speculation of another leadership shake-up, particularly regarding Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Despite the heightened tensions, Meranda retained the confidence of the majority of lawmakers, who passed a vote of confidence in her before the House adjourned indefinitely. The Progressives Alliance contends that these developments are being manipulated by political actors aiming to deepen the crisis and weaken Tinubu’s stronghold on Lagos politics.
"The true intention of those behind this drama is to create division within the APC in Lagos and weaken the structures that have ensured the party's dominance in the state. We urge all well-meaning members of our party and the general public to see through this ploy and stand by the legitimate leadership of the House," the group stated.
Obasa has since rejected his impeachment, further fueling the controversy surrounding the Assembly’s leadership. With the crisis showing no immediate signs of resolution, the APC group warns that continued political maneuvering could have wider implications for governance and stability in Lagos State.
