A 47-year-old man, Godwin Eguabor, who was allegedly caught posing as a lawyer while representing a client in court, has been arraigned before a Lagos State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Badagry.

The accused was reportedly arrested inside the courtroom by officials of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Badagry branch, while appearing for a case.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, the presiding Magistrate, L.A. Layeni, adjourned the case to March 13 to allow the prosecution, led by ASP Edet Ekpo, to amend the charges.

According to the Vice-Chairman of the NBA Badagry branch, Mr. Ekhors Atule, the alleged fake lawyer had attempted to represent a client when NBA officials intervened, leading to his arrest.

"The case was initially slated for mention and possible amendment, but the prosecutor requested additional time to amend the charges," Atule explained.

During the hearing, the magistrate inquired whether the defendant had legal representation, to which Eguabor responded that his lawyer was unavailable. In response, the court emphasized his right to legal counsel and rescheduled the case.

Atule reaffirmed the NBA’s commitment to exposing and prosecuting individuals engaging in fraudulent legal practice.

"The Badagry NBA branch will not tolerate impostors within the legal profession. Any fake lawyer found operating in our jurisdiction will be exposed and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," he stated.

The case continues on March 13.
