Chairman of the council, Mr. Joseph Gbenu, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, stating that the initiative aims to support local farmers and boost food production as the 2025 farming season approaches.
According to Gbenu, the newly acquired grading machines will be distributed to farmers to aid land preparation and improve cultivation efficiency.
“We are also prioritizing the development of critical infrastructure such as irrigation systems, farm-to-market roads, and storage facilities to enhance productivity,” he said.
He further disclosed that the council is actively exploring funding opportunities from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private foundations to support farmers and agribusinesses in the LCDA. Institutions such as the Bank of Agriculture, the Bank of Industry, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, he noted, provide various funding schemes, which the council is tapping into.
In addition to mechanization support, Gbenu highlighted plans to provide training programs for young people and capacity-building initiatives for farmers. These will focus on modern farming techniques, best practices, and business management skills to enhance agricultural efficiency.
“We are also working to improve market access for farmers by supporting agricultural marketing cooperatives and strengthening value chains,” he added.
Furthermore, the council intends to offer subsidies to farmers to enable them to access essential inputs such as seedlings during the planting season.
Gbenu reaffirmed the council’s commitment to increasing food production and improving the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities in Badagry.
