Reports according to The PUNCH on Thursday morning indicate that all police officers and other security aides assigned to Meranda have been pulled back, leaving the Speaker vulnerable.
A source close to Meranda, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the development. “All the Speaker’s security aides have been withdrawn. Even those attached to the House of Assembly have also been removed. The Speaker is now left without protection,” the source lamented.
This move comes amid growing uncertainty over Meranda's position as Speaker, with speculation mounting that she may be pressured to step down. The development follows high-level interventions from influential members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba, who have been involved in brokering peace within the fractured Assembly.
At a crucial meeting held last Sunday at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina, a panel comprising key stakeholders, including members of the powerful Governance Advisory Council (GAC), reportedly recommended a leadership change. The panel’s proposal includes the resignation of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Meranda, paving the way for a new lawmaker from Lagos West to assume the Assembly’s top position.
Meanwhile, in a development that raises further questions, sources within Obasa’s camp confirm that all security aides attached to him have now been reinstated. “As of this morning, Obasa’s security details have been fully restored,” an insider disclosed.
Confirming the situation to Punch, Meranda’s spokesperson, Ganzallo Victor, said, “We don’t know why the authorities have done this, but all her police officers and security details have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment.”
The withdrawal of Meranda’s security amid the deepening crisis raises fresh concerns over the power struggle within the Lagos State House of Assembly, as political heavyweights continue to shape the unfolding drama.
