Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, made this announcement in a post on X, formerly Twitter, emphasizing the government’s commitment to empowering local farmers. She explained that this intervention is part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s broader Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme, designed to boost agricultural output and ensure affordable food supply for residents.
"As part of the Ounje Eko Farmers' Subsidy Programme, we paid 25% of the land clearing costs for our farmers in Topo Island, Badagry, and made fertilizers provided by the Federal Government available to them. This land will be cultivated for vegetable production, with an off-taker arrangement in place to channel some of the produce to our Fresh Food Hubs at reduced prices," Olusanya stated.
The expanded Ounje Eko initiative now includes direct support for farmers engaged in poultry, fisheries, and crop production. The program covers 25% of feed costs, tractorization services, and fertilizer distribution to key farming clusters across the state. The ultimate goal is to ensure steady food supply, keep farms operational, and create job opportunities while reducing food costs for Lagosians.
The intervention at Daddi Louis is expected to significantly boost vegetable production in the area, ensuring that fresh produce reaches markets at affordable rates. With the government actively bridging gaps in agricultural production, the initiative aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, fostering food security and economic growth in Lagos State.
Farmers in Badagry have expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the subsidy and fertilizer distribution will enhance their productivity and improve livelihoods. The Lagos State Government has assured residents that similar interventions will be replicated across the state to further drive agricultural development and food security.
The Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme remains a key component of the state’s broader strategy to position Lagos as a leading hub for agricultural innovation and sustainable food systems.
