Fresh details have emerged regarding the crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, as Speaker Mojisola Meranda has reportedly agreed to step down— but only under specific conditions.

According Vanguard, sources close to the Assembly confirmed that Meranda insists her resignation must take place during a plenary session, a requirement that has now become a key point in negotiations.

The Assembly had adjourned indefinitely on Monday, February 17, following a vote of confidence passed by 36 out of 40 lawmakers in favor of Meranda’s leadership. However, after interventions from key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), it was agreed that she would vacate her position to allow the Speakership to be zoned to Lagos West.

Despite her willingness to step aside, Meranda has made it clear that due process must be followed. A senior legislative source emphasized this stance, stating:

“If the Speaker is to resign, it must happen in plenary. She cannot just step down without following the established procedures.”

With the House yet to reconvene, uncertainty looms over the exact timing of her resignation. Until plenary resumes, the status quo remains.

In a bid to restore stability, a delegation from Abuja, reportedly sent at the behest of President Bola Tinubu, has been holding high-level meetings with key stakeholders. Among those involved in the mediation process are former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and the Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Board, Pius Akinyelure.

Initial meetings between party elders, principal officers, and Assembly members took place over the weekend, with follow-up discussions expected to continue until a resolution is reached.

With the Speakership now set to be zoned to Lagos West, the contest for Meranda’s successor has intensified. The earlier reported seven lawmakers from Lagos West shortlisted has swell to eight in a latest report by Vanguard News in the shortlist now includes:

  • Setonji David (Badagry Constituency 2)
  • Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1)
  • Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1)
  • Adedamola Kasunmu (Ikeja 2)
  • Lukman Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1)
  • Wale Rauf Sulaimon (Mushin 2)
  • Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1)
  • Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2)

As political maneuvering continues behind closed doors, all eyes remain on the Lagos State House of Assembly to see how and when the transition will unfold.

With the crisis still unfolding, the focus is now on when plenary will resume and whether Meranda will follow through on her conditional resignation. Until then, the Lagos political landscape remains in suspense, awaiting the next decisive move in this high-stakes power tussle.
