A Lagos State lawmaker has dismissed reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu directed the reinstatement of ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, describing it as "fake news" aimed at distracting the newly elected Speaker, Princess Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

The rebuttal follows a viral report by the People's Gazette claiming that President Tinubu pressured the Lagos State lawmakers to return Obasa to office, arguing that the political cost of his removal outweighed any alleged wrongdoing. Badagry Today also culled the report

According to the report, a senior Lagos politician had indicated that the President wanted Obasa reinstated for a short period before stepping down on his terms. However, some lawmakers expressed strong opposition, warning that his return would pose significant political risks.

Obasa was removed on January 13 by 32 out of 40 members of the House of Assembly over allegations of misconduct, misappropriation of funds, and abuse of office. His removal paved the way for the emergence of Meranda as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

Reacting to the speculation, a lawmaker, who spoke anonymously to Vanguard News, debunked the claims, noting that Meranda had already secured the endorsement of key political stakeholders, including President Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), and past Assembly members.

“This is nothing but fake news. The Speaker has met with Mr. President, Mr. Governor, the GAC, and past members from the 1st to the 9th Assembly. There have been numerous courtesy calls and endorsements confirming the legitimacy of her election,” the lawmaker stated.

Political observers have also questioned the motives behind the reports, wondering whether they reflect high-level political maneuvering or mere attempts by Obasa’s supporters to regain lost ground.
