The crisis engulfing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has deepened following the controversial impeachment of former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. Reports indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu feels betrayed by members of the Governor's Advisory Council (GAC) for their inability—or refusal—to successfully execute his directive to reinstate the embattled Speaker and have his impeachment converted to a resignation.

According to a report by Punch, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has allegedly been fingered as a key financial backer of the GAC's efforts to resist Tinubu's intervention, further complicating the crisis.

Multiple reports had revealed that Tinubu was not consulted before Obasa's removal on January 13, a move that blindsided the President and fractured his decades-long political hold over Lagos. The impeachment, executed by 36 lawmakers, was allegedly based on allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. In Obasa’s place, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as Speaker, with Chief Whip Mojeed Fatai assuming the role of Deputy Speaker.

Earlier reports by Badagry Today have said  Tinubu, recognizing the potential damage to his political influence, instructed the GAC to ensure Obasa's return to the Assembly, with the understanding that he would resign to save face. However, despite marathon meetings at the Governor's Lodge in Marina, Lagos, lawmakers stood their ground, with 37 out of 39 rejecting Obasa's reinstatement.

In a dramatic twist, six GAC members were dispatched to Abuja last Wednesday to personally deliver a letter of apology and justification to Tinubu. However, reports suggest that they were unable to meet with the President, raising speculation about whether they were deliberately denied an audience.

Political analysts believe the crisis is more than just an internal APC dispute; it is a strategic battle for control ahead of the 2027 elections. The power struggle between the Mandate group—Obasa’s faction—and the Justice Forum, which reportedly has significant backing among lawmakers and Lagos indigenes, is said to be a driving force behind the impeachment.

An APC chieftain, according to Punch revealed that the move against Obasa was largely a preemptive strike to stifle his rumored gubernatorial ambition. “This is about 2027. Obasa's removal was orchestrated to clear obstacles from the path of other political interests. He made himself a target after that infamous budget speech. His opponents seized the opportunity to turn lawmakers against him,” the source said.

While Governor Sanwo-Olu has publicly distanced himself from the saga, insiders allege that he has been a silent force funding the rebellion against Tinubu’s directive. “The governor is playing the devil’s advocate. Some say he is the major financier ensuring that the President's order is ignored,” the source told Punch

Sanwo-Olu's spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, also insisted that the impeachment was purely a legislative matter, devoid of executive interference. “It has nothing to do with the governor,” Akosile told Punch.

However, with the crisis showing no signs of resolution, observers say this could mark a significant shift in Lagos APC politics. “For the first time, Tinubu’s control in Lagos is being tested. If he doesn’t assert his authority now, it could set a dangerous precedent for his dominance in the state,” a political analyst noted.

As the standoff continues, all eyes are on Tinubu’s next move—whether he will double down on his directive or recalibrate his strategy to maintain control over his political empire.
