In a fresh twist to the ongoing controversy surrounding the ouster of former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos to intervene and stabilize the situation.
This development follows an earlier report by People’s Gazette, which claimed that Tinubu had discreetly ordered Obasa’s reinstatement. However, a fresh report by Vanguard News suggests that rather than reinstatement, the President has mandated the GAC to manage the fallout and ensure a peaceful resolution.
The report by Vanguard revealed that GAC members held a crucial closed-door meeting at an undisclosed location over the weekend to forge a common strategy for addressing the crisis. As the apex decision-making body of the Lagos APC, the GAC’s resolutions are binding on party members. Led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with Tinubu as its lifetime patron, the council includes past governors, deputy governors, senators, and senior party leaders.
An APC chieftain, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the GAC’s intervention, stating: “Based on Mr. President’s directive, GAC members have stepped in to prevent the party from descending into chaos. I can assure you that there is no division within the GAC, and ongoing meetings are aimed at resolving the matter amicably.”
On speculations about Obasa’s possible suspension or probe, the party leader dismissed such claims, emphasizing that the APC has internal conflict resolution mechanisms to handle such issues. He also ruled out the possibility of Obasa defecting to an opposition party, describing him as a committed progressive with longstanding ties to Tinubu dating back to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) era.
Obasa himself, upon his recent return from abroad, had reaffirmed his loyalty to APC, urging his supporters to remain within the party. The GAC’s intervention, backed by Tinubu’s directive, is expected to pave the way for a compromise that ensures stability within the Lagos APC.
