In a bold move, elected local government chairmen and councillors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reclaimed control of 14 secretariats across Osun State, defying Governor Ademola Adeleke’s stance on the contentious leadership dispute, Badagry Today understands

According to Punch News, as at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, officials elected during the October 15, 2022, local government election had resumed duties in key local government areas, including Ila, Ede South, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Boripe, Oriade, and Obokun. Others where they took over include Ejigbo, Iwo, Ayedire, and Boripe local government secretariats.

The move comes a day after a violent clash erupted over the legitimacy of the elected officials, further deepening the political crisis in the state. However, as of Wednesday morning, the takeover remained largely peaceful, with heavy security presence around the secretariats.

Former Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Jamiu Olawumi, confirmed the resumption to Punch, stating that security agencies, including police tactical teams, armed civil defense operatives, and DSS personnel, were on ground to maintain order.

“We now have 14 local government secretariats back under the leadership of duly elected chairmen and councillors. Security is top-notch, and we commend Governor Adeleke for ensuring there’s no violence. However, we urge him to withdraw the thugs reportedly lurking around town to prevent any further crisis,” Olawumi said.

He emphasized that the enforcement of the court’s ruling on the legitimacy of the elected officials was non-negotiable and urged Governor Adeleke to engage with key national figures, including the President, the Chief of Staff, and the Inspector General of Police, to ensure stability.

“Our chairmen and councillors are ready to work in their rightful capacities. They represent a legitimate tier of government, and we expect full cooperation in the interest of Osun’s development,” he added.

The development marks a significant escalation in the power tussle between the APC-led local governments and the PDP-led state government, setting the stage for further political confrontations in Osun State.
