The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to oust former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in absentia over allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness. His deputy, Meranda, was swiftly installed as the new Speaker—a move that triggered intense debate among GAC members, party stakeholders, and the public.
The Monday meeting, held at Lagos House, Marina, and chaired by GAC leader Pa Tajudeen Olusi, sought to address concerns over the leadership composition of the Assembly. With both Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Meranda hailing from Lagos Central, some GAC members proposed shifting the Speakership to Lagos West to maintain regional balance.
However, the proposal met stiff resistance from lawmakers representing Lagos West, who formed a formidable bloc in support of Meranda. Their collective stance effectively shut down the push for her removal, securing her position amid growing political pressure.
Report according to Vanguard has that Obasa had the backing of influential figures within the Tinubu political family, who had been lobbying the GAC to intervene. Despite these efforts, Meranda’s leadership remained intact, sparking jubilant celebrations among Assembly members and staff.
“The attempt to replace Meranda as Speaker failed. The discussions mainly focused on balancing the leadership between senatorial districts,” a source disclosed.
For now, the crisis appears defused, but political analysts suggest the power struggle within the Lagos APC is far from over.
