A major operation in Kebbi State on February 14, 2025, saw police operatives engage a group of kidnappers who had abducted 60-year-old Umaru Bawa from Gobiraje Village in Suru Local Government Area. The operatives tracked the suspects to Tundafari Forest, where a fierce gun battle ensued. Four of the kidnappers were neutralized, one was captured with fatal injuries, and the victim was rescued unharmed. Additionally, the sum of ₦3 million, which had been paid as ransom, was recovered.
Similarly, in Imo State, a tactical operation targeting an Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN) camp in Ezioha Mbaitolu, Umuele Umuaka Njaba LGA, resulted in the neutralization of two terrorist kingpins on February 8. Security forces recovered seven AK-47 rifles, 13 pump-action guns, and hundreds of live rounds.
A follow-up operation on February 9 in Nkwukwo Forest, Mbaitoli LGA, led to another deadly confrontation, where police operatives engaged terrorists who opened fire on sighting them. Three additional terrorist leaders were neutralized, and security forces seized two AK-47 rifles loaded with 36 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun, a cutlass, four motorcycles, and various criminal charms.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their bravery and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks. He called for increased intelligence gathering, community engagement, and public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
The Nigeria Police Force reassured citizens that operations will continue with renewed determination to ensure a safer and more secure nation.
