President Tinubu to Inaugurate Upgraded Lagos-Badagry Expressway by May

President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in May, marking a significant milestone in the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development. The expressway, currently undergoing rehabilitation and expansion into six lanes, is expected to be completed by April.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this announcement during an inspection tour of the highway on Thursday. He confirmed that the 46-kilometer stretch, which forms the first section of the ECOWAS road extending to the Seme Border and Abidjan, is on track for completion and will be commissioned as part of events commemorating President Tinubu’s second year in office.

Umahi disclosed that the federal government has disbursed N50 billion out of the N71 billion contract sum to the contractor handling the project. He expressed confidence in the contractor’s capacity to deliver the project on schedule.

“The contractor has been paid about N50 billion, leaving a balance of N21 billion to complete the job,” Umahi stated. “We have scheduled a meeting with the contractor to discuss how to finalize the remaining four to five kilometers before April 20.”

Furthermore, Umahi revealed that the second section of the expressway, which extends to the Seme Border, will be constructed using concrete pavement. He also hinted at plans to engage border states in completing their respective portions of the ECOWAS highway project leading to Abidjan.

Commending President Tinubu’s dedication to infrastructure development, Umahi highlighted that the administration is currently working on about 270 inherited projects nationwide, many of which are slated for commissioning in May.

Originally awarded in October 2018, the Lagos-Badagry Expressway project is poised to significantly enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and boost economic activities along the crucial corridor. President Tinubu’s forthcoming inauguration of the project underscores the federal government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Nigeria.
