Obasa Suit Against Meranda

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, the ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has approached the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, seeking an expedited hearing of his suit challenging his impeachment on January 13, 2025.

Obasa, who was removed from office while outside the country, contends that his impeachment was unlawful and is demanding a swift judicial review.

His motion, filed on February 12, lists the Lagos State House of Assembly and its current Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as defendants. Through his legal team led by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, Obasa is requesting:

  • A court order to fast-track the hearing of the originating summons.
  • A reduction in the time allowed for the defendants to file their response, limiting it to seven days.
  • A further order reducing the timeframe for his own reply to three days after receiving the defendants' response.

Obasa's application is built on nine legal grounds, focusing on constitutional provisions and Assembly rules. He argues that the House’s session on January 13, which led to his removal, was unconstitutional as it was convened without his authorization or delegation of authority.

He further claims that the continued leadership of the Assembly under its new Speaker violates established laws and must be urgently reviewed.

Citing public interest, Obasa urged the court to expedite proceedings to prevent disruptions to legislative activities in Lagos State. He also asserted that granting his application would not disadvantage any party involved.

The case now awaits a ruling on his request for an accelerated hearing.
