Amid rising concerns over smuggling activities in Badagry, another respected traditional ruler, Oba Sejiro Olamilekan James, the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, has strongly denied any involvement in or support for illegal trade along the Seme-Badagry axis.

Oba Sejiro made his position clear during a press briefing in Badagry, days after His Royal Majesty, the Alapa of Egun-Awori Apa Kingdom, Oba Oyekan Adekanmi Ajose, also distanced himself from similar allegations.

Expressing his shock over the claims, the monarch stated, “I was surprised to read online that I was among the traditional rulers accused of supporting smuggling. I have no hand in illegality, and I have consistently advised the youths in my community to conduct their businesses within the legal framework of import and export.”

He further warned that anyone caught engaging in smuggling should face the full weight of the law, emphasizing that it was unfair and degrading to associate Badagry’s royal fathers with such illicit activities.

However, the traditional ruler did not stop at denial. He used the opportunity to highlight the underlying economic challenges facing border communities, stressing the urgent need for job creation and infrastructural development in Badagry-West Local Council Development Area.

“There is no electricity, no industries, and no job opportunities for our teeming youths. If the government wants to curb smuggling, they must first address the lack of economic alternatives for our people,” he stated.

As the debate over smuggling in the region continues, Oba Sejiro’s remarks reinforce growing calls for sustainable development as a long-term solution to illegal trade.
