This directive came as the Assembly debated the state of abandoned road projects across Lagos, with particular concern for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo Bayeku, Ikorodu. Awarded in 2017, the road remains in a deplorable condition, exposing residents to security risks and economic hardship.
Raising the matter under ‘Matter of Urgent Importance,’ Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu 2) urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritize these projects and direct contractors to resume work immediately. He proposed that government agencies provide 60% of the necessary funds upfront while ensuring the security of workers to facilitate swift completion.
“This road, like many others, has been abandoned for too long. Instead of easing transportation, it has become a source of distress for residents,” Moshood lamented.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Sa’ad Olumo (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1) noted that despite adequate budgetary provisions, contractors often blamed rising material costs for project delays.
Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), stressed that the issue extended beyond Ikorodu, saying, “This is a state-wide problem. We must summon all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to explain these delays.”
Hon. Abiodun Tobun advocated for a legal framework compelling all administrations to complete projects inherited from their predecessors, preventing the recurrence of abandoned projects.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Ganiyu Okanlawon (Kosofe I), called for strict measures against defaulting contractors, demanding they be held accountable.
In response, Speaker Meranda directed all legislators to submit detailed reports of abandoned roads in their respective constituencies to the appropriate ministry for immediate action.
The Assembly resolved to press Governor Sanwo-Olu for urgent intervention, ensuring the swift completion of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road and other stalled projects across Lagos.
