Alausa stated that YABATECH had met all necessary requirements to transition into a university, emphasizing its legacy and academic strength.
“The Rector mentioned that staff, students, and management have been praying and fasting for this transformation. When I presented the matter to President Tinubu, he promptly approved it. We are now awaiting the necessary documentation and procedural steps,” the minister said.
He noted that the institution boasts over 200 PhD holders, reinforcing its readiness for university status. “This school is a legacy. The credit for this achievement goes to the President, who remains committed to education and the future of our youths,” he added.
During his visit, Alausa inspected and inaugurated several projects within the institution, commending its management for maintaining high standards. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting technological and vocational education, stressing its role in curbing brain drain, often referred to as the "Japa Syndrome."
“We are prioritizing Artificial Intelligence, robotics, coding, and other technological fields. If our youths excel in these areas, they can work for global firms remotely while residing in Nigeria, earning foreign exchange, and reducing the urge to migrate for menial jobs,” he said.
The minister highlighted that for decades, Nigeria had neglected technical and vocational education in favor of conventional degrees. However, the current administration aims to realign the system to focus on manufacturing, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship, following global best practices.
YABATECH Rector, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, welcomed the development, stating that the institution aspires to be a specialized university for technical and vocational education, with a strong focus on innovation and societal impact.
“We don’t just want to be another university; we aim to be a hub for technological and vocational advancement that drives national development,” Abdul said.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Funso Afolabi, also expressed appreciation for the minister’s visit and urged continued government support.
A bill formalizing the institution’s new status and name is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for legislative approval and presidential assent.
