2027: Atiku Breaks Silence on Purported Plan to Dump PDP Again

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed speculations suggesting he is set to abandon the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Saturday by his media office, Atiku described the reports as “a complete fallacy” with no logical basis.

Recent political discourse has been dominated by claims that the former Vice President is exploring an exit strategy from the PDP to enhance his chances in the next presidential race. However, Atiku has categorically refuted such assertions, stating that his focus remains on fostering a formidable coalition of opposition forces—including the PDP—to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We have observed that certain media platforms are propagating unverified claims that Atiku Abubakar is leaving the PDP. This is entirely false and baseless,” the statement read.

Atiku, a long-time advocate for opposition unity, reiterated his commitment to the PDP while emphasizing the necessity of a broad-based alliance to unseat the APC.

“Recall that Atiku Abubakar has consistently championed the formation of a coalition among opposition parties to rescue Nigeria from the current hardship imposed by the APC-led administration. His position has always been clear—this coalition must include the PDP,” the statement added.

This clarification comes amid reports of some Atiku loyalists defecting to the APC in Abuja, fueling speculation about his political future. But his camp insists that such narratives are misleading and designed to undermine ongoing efforts to consolidate the opposition.

“It is, therefore, misleading to suggest that the Waziri Adamawa is abandoning the PDP. Such an allegation runs contrary to the very essence of the grand coalition he is spearheading alongside other key political figures,” the statement continued.

Atiku’s media team reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the PDP, dismissing claims of defection as a distraction from the broader mission of uniting opposition forces for the 2027 elections.

“Any suggestion that Atiku is leaving the PDP is a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians about the scale and significance of the opposition movement gathering momentum to reclaim the country from the APC’s grip.”
