Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied allegations that he received financial support from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his 2023 presidential campaign.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Atiku Media Office, his media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed the claims as "kindergarten propaganda" and "a blatant lie from the pit of hell."
The reports in circulation alleged that Governor Sanwo-Olu provided funds, purportedly sourced from Lagos State coffers, to Atiku's campaign. Some versions of the story even suggested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was investigating the matter.
Refuting the claims, Ibe insisted that Atiku had no relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu and had never met him before. “How is it possible for Atiku, who has no connection with Sanwo-Olu, to engage in any financial transaction with him, especially during the 2023 presidential election in which his own party was a direct opponent?” he asked.
The statement challenged the EFCC to publicly disclose any findings if indeed it was probing the matter, describing the allegations as a politically motivated attempt to tarnish Atiku’s reputation.
Meanwhile, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who was also mentioned in the unfolding controversy, has yet to comment on the matter, maintaining silence as the debate rages on.
With the accusations stirring political discourse, analysts say this development could have implications for both Atiku’s political future and the credibility of those behind the allegations.
